Position Title: Ranch Manager

Name of Ranch/Business: Ladder Ranch/Turner Enterprises, Inc.

Location: Caballo, New Mexico

Position Description: The Manager is responsible for the operation of a 156,439 deeded acre ranch located 30 miles west of Truth or Consequences,
New Mexico. The ranch acreage is in Sierra County, NM. Ranch operations include bison production (600 +/-cows and yearlings), conservation projects which include Bolson Tortoise, Chiricahua Leopard Frogs, and Mexican Grey Wolf. Commercial hunting operations for Elk, Mule Deer and Turkey. Ted Turner Reserves also operates on the ranch for nature tours. The ranch has several archeological and historic sites which are investigated/worked by scientist and toured by TTR guests. The ranch has an extensive operation to propagate quail over large portions of the ranch for hunting by owner and guests.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience: Undergraduate degree in resource management or business and a minimum of 10 years directly-related experience with extensive budgetary responsibility are desired, including leadership and supervision of operational programs that demonstrate an ability to establish and perpetuate a positive team effort. Extensive hands-on experience in ranching operations, grazing management, hunting and guiding, biological work/research projects and employee supervision is required.
  • Specific Skills/Abilities: Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to apply relationship skills, diplomacy, and common sense/wisdom to a wide variety of problem-solving situations. Ability to understand and manage the diverse components of a complex operation and ecosystem, including bison production, wildlife and conservation projects and main house operations for owner and family. Ability to analyze challenges and opportunities and make sound recommendations and decisions. Ability to develop and manage fiscally sound budgets. Ability to successfully manage a large Turner ranch consistent with the TEI Mission Statement: “To manage Turner lands in an economically sustainable and ecologically sensitive manner, while promoting the conservation of native species and habitats.” An understanding and working knowledge of the Turner Conservation Trust Conservation Assessment for the ranch. The Manager must be willing and able to perform manual as well as administrative tasks.
  • General Knowledge: Working knowledge of bison, wildlife (both game and non-game species), rangeland and natural resource management, business contracts, road maintenance, infrastructure facilities repair and maintenance, computers, conservation projects.

Responsibilities: The Manager supervises 4-6 full-time employees and up to 2 part-time/seasonal employees as well as providing support for multiple biologists and conservation projects/personnel. Responsibilities include preparation and oversight of an annual operating and capital budget of approximately $2 million, monthly reports to TEI management, maintenance and enhancement of the profitability and reputation of the ranch, and stewardship of its human and natural resources. The Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with neighboring ranches/property owners, local community leaders, local/state/federal government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. The Manager is also responsible for the general oversight of the ranch office, maintenance team and the house cleaning team of the owner’s residence that is used and operated by Ted Turner Reserves. The Manager will also be responsible for hosting visits by owner/family/guests for quail hunting.

The Manager interacts with the owner and his family. The Manager will work closely with the ranch staff, the TEI Bozeman Administrative office (General Manager, Director of Ranch Operations, Natural Resource Director, TEI Veterinarian, Turner Endangered Species Fund, and the other TEI ranch managers. The Manager also interacts with the TEI Atlanta Corporate office (Office of the Chairman, CFO/CAO, CCO, Controller, Director of Risk Management, HR, Benefits and Payroll) and outside legal counsel and consultants. The Manager reports to the Director of Ranch Operations, Turner Enterprises Inc.
