Emily StriblingGeneral, Ranch Manager Job Listings

Position Title: Ranch Manager

Name of Ranch/Business: Calvert Brothers Ranch

Location: Pearsall, TX

Job Summary: The Calvert Brothers Ranch (CBR) lies in Frio County, approximately 75 minutes southwest of San Antonio, 18 miles southwest of Pearsall, TX and 11 miles west of Dilley, TX. Comprising approximately 4800 acres, the ranch lies on the Leona River and consists of open rangeland, ranchland, farmland, and wildlife habitat. For the past 50+ years, CBR has primarily been used for recreation by the non-resident family members. With the transfer of management to the third generation, the ranch is undergoing a transition, with increased focus on grazing, wildlife and habitat management as well as income generation. To that end, the Calvert family is currently working with CKWRI and other partners, and seeks an entrepreneurial-minded candidate to help with the transition. Initially, the candidate will focus on specific tasks and report directly to a family representative. Priorities for this initial period include but are not limited to: grazing management, managing a commercial hunting program, managing the reclamation of oil and gas sites, and developing a comprehensive land plan for better utilization of water and grazing lands. Upon the retirement of the current ranch manager of 30+ year tenure in December 2024, the candidate will assume the overall responsibilities for managing the ranch.

Qualifications:  The most important qualities a candidate can bring to the table are the ability to balance the multiple interests of a large and growing family together with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong communication and organizational skills. A college graduate who is familiar with ranching, the ideal candidate will embrace professional development opportunities offered by organizations such as the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Texas A&M Extension, Texas Wildlife Association, and Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. A “people person”, the ideal candidate will develop strong relationships within the community, including with law enforcement, NRCS, TAMU extension, border patrol, county officials and others, and will work to represent the ranch in a positive manner. With the ranch located close to Pearsall (population 7,637) and Dilley (3,310), this is the perfect opportunity for a young married couple who would like to provide their children the advantages of growing up in a small rural community. Specific desired qualifications include:

  • Ranching experience, especially with livestock and wildlife.
  • Excellent computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft office and mapping platforms.
  • Familiarity with oilfield operations, surface use agreements, and reclamation.
  • General knowledge of machinery and vehicle maintenance.
  • General facilities management knowledge.

Responsibilities :

For the initial period, specific responsibilities include:

  • Executing a commercial hunting operation.
  • Designing and monitoring a high intensity, low frequency rotation of grazing lessee’s cattle.
  • Identifying and facilitating conservation and range management studies for ranch participation.
  • Monitoring compliance with conservation easement held by the Texas Agricultural Land Trust.
  • Managing oil field impacts and relationships.
  • Monitoring progress of and ensure compliance with current MLDP deer harvest program.

Additionally, the candidate will work with the family to develop a long-term land plan to address water, wildlife and grazing needs.

Throughout the initial period, the candidate will work with the family so that upon the retirement of the current ranch foreman, the candidate can assume responsibility for all aspects of managing the ranch, including but not limited to:

  • Developing and executing plans for range management and revenue generation.
  • Conducting quarterly and year-end business meetings for the family.
  • Designing and monitoring budgets.
  • Supervising salaried staff and contract employees.
  • Development and execution of ongoing infrastructure improvement and maintenance plans for roads, water, fences, etc., including management of all ranch and family assets.

Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with experience plus annual bonus. Medical insurance plus one week paid sick leave, ranch vehicle, two weeks paid vacation, housing and paid utilities, retirement plan.
