Sam Newell

Emily StriblingBio's, Graduate Students, Master's Program

Newell was raised on his family’s farm in Nephi, Utah and immediately managed a ranch in northeastern Utah post high school graduation in 2012 until setting off for college at Utah State Univeristy, a few years later. In between college semesters, Newell and his wife, Lauren, worked on ranches in Nebraska, South Dakota, Florida and Colorado. Upon graduation in 2018 with a B.S in animal science and a minor in agricultural business, Newell began working for Deseret Cattle and Timber in Northern Florida where he later became a unit manager in 2019 managing 19,000 acres and 2,000 cows.

While interning in South Dakota during college, Newell learned of the KRIRM master’s program from a father-son duo at the ranch and was intrigued. He knew if he wanted to pursue his master’s, the Institute would be the perfect fit. Looking towards the future, Newell wants to “manage great ranches in great places,” and says, “I believe the KRIRM program will teach me how to be a successful manager and leader,” enabling him to achieve those goals.

Newell and his wife Lauren have been married for seven years and share a passion for ranching and horse training. Their son Beau is two years old and the “joy of their lives,” he says.

Newell holds the Four Sixes Ranch Endowed Fellowship as a graduate student at KRIRM.
