Position Description: The Ranch Manager (RM) will provide operational excellence through thoughtful management and leadership, communication with the family office, as well as sound financial accountability. This is a multi-faceted role, with diverse responsibilities, requiring teamwork, entrepreneurship, and adaptability, focused on continuous improvement of operations and efficiency. With a passion for land conservation, the RM must be able to capably function at the level of granular operational details, anticipate needs and act accordingly, as well as provide key leadership by providing a long-term strategy for the ranch.

The property is a private working ranch adjacent to the Northern California coast, near Half Moon Bay. Exceptionalism is at the core of our operations. The Ranch has dedicated significant resources and efforts to steward and enhance the important habitats and infrastructure throughout the property. The Ranch is maintained on this iconic landscape for the benefit of the land itself and for the people and animals that reside on it. The Ranch partners as needed with government and private entities to guide and sustain these special lands and direct regenerative activities.

Everything we do at the Ranch begins with the land. The Ranch encompasses over 2,000 acres of old-growth redwood forests, grasslands, spring creeks, riparian areas, and dryland pastures at elevations ranging from 330 feet to over 1,400 feet. The Ranch is dedicated to an environmental ethos that incorporates livestock and agriculture
operations and other multiple initiatives to support and enhance the landscape. Regenerative ranching, including rotational grazing and adaptive management, are utilized to not only sustain the land as it is today, but also enhance its vitality over future generations.

Qualifications:

  • The applicant should have excellent contemporary ranch management skills, be familiar with ecologically based land conservation methods, and have strong animal husbandry and livestock handling skills.
  •  Possess a collaborative management style based on clear communication, vision for the future, and outstanding problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrable experience managing and directing operations at a working ranch with multiple employees.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) ability is helpful but not required.
  • Familiarity with current computer business software and GIS software (ArcGIS) expertise is required.
  • Possess excellent project management skills, record-keeping, and project analysis abilities.
  •  Familiarity with wildfire readiness and mitigation methodology is required.
  • Wildland firefighting training/certification and formal emergency response training are desirable but not required.
  • The ability to work under harsh weather conditions, lift heavy items, and other general conditions found on a working ranch is required.
  • Residing on site in Ranch-supplied housing is required.
  • Education: No specific education requirement, but a relevant undergraduate and/or advanced degree in ranch management or agribusiness, environmental science, forestry, or another applicable program is preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.Education and Experience

Responsibilities: The position will oversee the daily operations of the Ranch and provide seasonally adaptable long-term work plans. In doing so, the RM will work closely and collaboratively with other members of the Ranch team providing leadership support to the Ranch’s key operations, including livestock husbandry, agriculture, pasture
management, landscaping, and infrastructure maintenance.

The RM is responsible for business operations, leadership development, internal communication, community engagement, marketing of livestock, and administrative duties. As such, this position requires a person who is capable of handling complex responsibilities that range from accomplishing routine daily tasks to providing long-term strategy and planning designed to cope effectively with changing land or operational conditions.

The RM is expected to be a working manager, focused on details and have a solid knowledge of Ranch operations to oversee all activities and is expected to work hand-in-hand with the rest of the ranch workers as needed. The successful RM will possess the initiative to recommend changes that improve overall Ranch operations.
