Position Title: Ranch Operations Manager

Name of Ranch/Business: H.R. Smith Ranch / KRIRM

Location: Campbellton, Texas

Position Description: The H.R. Smith Ranch was recently gifted to Texas A&M University-Kingsville Foundation for the sole purpose of supporting the mission of the King Ranch® Institute for Ranch Management (KRIRM). The ranch consists of approximately 7,800 acres in Atascosa County, Texas. The working ranch is managed by the KRIRM as a self-sustaining entity including livestock and wildlife enterprises. When fully stocked the H.R. Smith Ranch will carry approximately 330 cows. The Ranch Operations Manager will live on the ranch and, under direction, oversees ranch business operations for KRIRM, which include hiring employees, negotiating contracts, addressing budget matters, understanding general business operations, and guiding work teams.

Qualifications: 

  • Education – Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience – Five years of related experience managing land resources and cattle operations.
  • Knowledge of – Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to – Ability to implement and maintain a managerial accounting system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under direction of the KRIRM Director, provide operations and management leadership of the H.R. Smith Ranch.
  • Work cooperatively with the KRIRM Director on strategic direction of ranching operations.
  • Develop and maintain overarching management system for H.R. Smith Ranch, including a managerial accounting system.
    Prepare and process various operational documents (financial statements, inventories, etc.).
  • Coordinate all infrastructure maintenance and renovations for H.R. Smith Ranch.
  • Establish and ensure communication and enforcement of rules and regulations for supervised staff members and student employees.
  • Ensure compliance with Beef Quality Assurance guidelines for animal welfare and handling.
  • Maintain a safety conscious environment for employees and visitors.
  • Interact with individuals or groups outside of KRIRM, including but not limited to industry stakeholders and students.
