Position Description: The Stuart Land and Cattle Company of Virginia, Inc (SLCC) is seeking a Farm Manager. This is a unique, rewarding, and challenging opportunity to help lead the oldest continuously-operating cattle ranch in the country. We are looking for a self-motivated, thoughtful, experienced, and adventurous candidate with a shared commitment to our vision for delivering excellence in animal health, beef quality, soil and water conservation, and staff enrichment. Qualifications:

  • Must be self-motivated, hard-working, professional, accountability-oriented, and actively interested in learning
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in overseeing complex cattle operations. Must be an excellent cow herd manager
  • Strong skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, operating within protocols and budgets, multitasking, time management, and allocating resources and materials to meet project deadlines and goals
  • Experience with maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting farm equipment/resource systems (e.g. tractors, hay equipment, water systems, fence, etc.)
  • Very comfortable with technology and back-office systems such as spreadsheets, email, and reports/data
  • Excellent communication and people skills. People management skills are equally important as cattle management skills for this position. You should be ready to mentor your team and lead by example

Responsibilities:

  • Daily management and operation of 16,000 acre cattle ranch
  • Ownership of animal health and nutrition, breeding, calving, grazing management, and soil health
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and adapt systems for farm management and continual process improvement
  • Commitment to and delivery of excellence in staff development
  • Ownership of record keeping and data management. Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and on-farm action
  • Oversee various other farm related tasks such as equipment and tractor maintenance, procurement of feed and supplies, coordination of vendors and contractors, maintaining fences, watering systems, other infrastructure, and more
