Position Title: Ranch Manager

Job Summary: Casper College is seeking an individual that has a strong knowledge of agricultural operations of hay production, and livestock care. The successful candidate will be self-starting, motivated by excellence and able to successfully manage an agricultural enterprise. The position of Ranch Manager coordinates and manages all functions, and daily operations of the Casper College Agricultural and Equine Resource Center (CCAERC). Housing is provided for the successful candidate.

This position includes housing plus utilities, internet, and an opportunity for production bonus.

Work Environment: Work is performed both outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and indoors in either a barn, office, classroom, or other various structures under varying room temperatures and lighting conditions. Travel will be required. Work may cause exposure to atmospheric conditions such as dirt, dust, adverse weather conditions and noise levels expected in a normal agricultural environment. Employees work frequently around a variety of livestock and other various ranch/farm animals. Employee will work frequently with students, faculty, staff, community members and student work-study employees.

Physical Demands: Employee must be able to stand for long periods of time, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computers, feel, and reach with their hands and arms. Work requires walking and standing for extended periods of time and frequent lifting/moving of up to 100 pounds and moving more with various assistance methods. Work includes use of hands to manipulate both livestock and use tools, equipment and vehicles. Extensive vehicle and equipment use will be required (equipment, vehicles, vans, etc.) Work will be performed when needed and at times of crucial attendance, such as harvesting season, when students are present, and any other time of crucial attendance, as deemed the dean of the School of Science or head Rodeo Coach.

Qualifications: 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in agriculture, animal science, range science, or equivalent work experience
  • Experience managing and operating a ranch/farm entity
  • Driver’s license with clean MVR
  • Knowledge of:
    • Livestock health and nutritional needs
    • Crop production, best practices
    • Pivot irrigation systems
    • Efficient use of agricultural equipment employed in the hay production
    • Equine facilities
    • Office technology (computer, productivity software)
    • Ranch and farm implements and equipment
    • Repairing various equipment
    • Grounds keeping
  • Ability to:
    • Perform duties in a diligent, professional manner
    • Manage crop production, employing best practices
    • Care for livestock, employing best practices
    • Establish positive working relationships with students, faculty, and community
    • Manage time effectively
    • Communicate effectively
    • Work with a team and individually

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in agriculture, animal science, range science, or related field
  • Experience working in a community college environment

Responsibilities : The position of Ranch Manager is responsible for the operation of the Casper College Agricultural and Equine Resource Center. Primary responsibilities include production of crops, complete care of livestock, developing and maintaining positive relationships with community members, maintaining all grounds and facilities and supervising work-study students. The Ranch Manager establishes relationships with Alcova Irrigation District and local law enforcement to ensure support, safety, and security for the facility. This position reports to the dean of the School of Science and head Rodeo Team Coach. The successful candidate is required to reside at the CCAERC with provided housing.

Job Description: The CCAERC is located 15 miles West of Casper. The total ranch acreage is 167 with 120 irrigated under center pivot. Casper College and community programs enhance student usage of the facility, and the incumbent candidate is expected to contribute as needed in these programmatic efforts.

Essential Duties:

  • Oversee and maintain CCAERC facilities in a professional manner
  • Direct and coordinate all activities required for the successful operation of Casper College Agriculture and Equine Resource Center
  • Produce, harvest and store all crops
  • Employ best management practices related to crop production
  • Maintain and repair all pivot irrigation systems and hay equipment
  • Provide daily health and nutritional care of all livestock
  • Employ best management practices related to livestock health and nutritional needs
  • Maintain equine areas in coordination with rodeo program
  • Assist with selecting and purchasing ranch equipment in conjunction with Casper College administration
  • Responsible for maintaining all CCAERC property
  • Maintain the overall appearance including weeds, fencing, livestock facilities and buildings
  • Assist faculty with plans for teaching, research, and service at the CCAERC
  • Maintain CCAERC budget
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with the local community
  • Provide predator control
  • Maintain security at the facility, establish relationship with local law enforcement
  • Adhere to established safety guidelines for personal safety and safety of others
  • Other duties as assigned, and as necessary

Estimated Salary & Benefits: $45,000. This position includes housing plus utilities, internet, and an opportunity for production bonus.
