Position Title: Manager Replacement Heifers, Yearling Steers
Name of Ranch/Business: Maddux Cattle Company
Location: Nebraska
Position Description: Manage 1,000-1,200 composite replacement heifers from weaning through breeding, up until they go to cornstalks in the fall. Winter graze 3,000 yearling steers up until grass time in the spring.
Qualifications:
- Interpersonal skills, team building, grazing knowledge, reproduction strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the grass, facilities and people associated with the development, including fencing for rotational grazing on native range and center pivots.
- Develop heifers in a team setting to reach target weight of 675# at breeding, 800# in the fall.
- Plan, schedule and implement all agronomic practices on grass including fertilization and herbicides in irrigated grass.
- Keep high productivity on irrigated grass and native range that ensures high breed up rates.
- Help with supplementation, fencing and moving of all cows and heifers in fall and winter.
- Monitor and suggest supplementation strategies to keep high reproductive performance.
- Survey and implement synchronization strategies to ensure early breeding season fertility.
- Develop plans and schedules for optimum development of steers for summer grazing.
- Maintain grazing records for all cattle and range.
New and Increased Responsibilities:
- Build formalized protocols used to achieve goals with replacement heifers
- Look for opportunities to use other genetic improvement tools in improving our herd.
- Evaluate wintering strategies and protocols on yearling grass steers.
- Develop interpersonal and leadership skills for effective people management.
- Continued use and development of cover crops for development and gain in yearling cattle.
