Position Title: Livestock Manager
Name of Ranch/Business: AU Ranches – Operated by Nevada Gold Mines
Location: Elko, Eureka, and Lander County, NV
Position Description: Livestock Manager to oversee all aspects of a historic 650,000 acre, cow/calf operation in the Northern Great Basin of Nevada (TS, Horseshoe, Hadley and Dean Ranches). Management oversight includes 4,200 head of mother cows, including marketing activities. Supervision of a cowboy crew and ranch hands needed to meet cattle production goals. Role will also include input into agricultural decisions for 70+ irrigation pivots and guidance on large scale habitat mitigation banks and projects that are a large part of the companies portfolio.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, environment, community, and the ability to work safely.
- Directly manages all aspects of AU Ranches cattle and horses, including supervision of the Cowboss, cowboys, and other livestock production staff as assigned.
- Works with the Manager of Biodiversity and Rangelands on coordination with BLM and Other agencies.
- Works with Manager of Biodiversity and Rangelands on livestock grazing planning and range improvement projects.
- Responsible for managing NGMs grazing with respect to mitigation projects, BLM’s Outcome Based Grazing, and BLM’s grazed Fuel Breaks project.
- Works with Manager of Biodiversity and Ranch Business Manager, on budgeting and contracting needs.
- Role will perform tasks and work on analysis of both the Ranching and Biodiversity programs.
- Responsible for setting, tracking and delivering on Livestock Production Metrics.
- Responsible for setting, tracking and delivering on Ecological Metrics as related to grazing.
- Responsible for livestock inventory, marketing and sales.
- Responsible for ordering and procuring all livestock related supplies (vaccines, protein, vet supplies, etc.)
- Responsible for all aspects of livestock health including securing and scheduling veterinary services for cattle and horses.
- Responsible for staff scheduling and winter feeding.
- Candidate will identify and execute on key ranch processes and strategy, and be part of the team that develops business and operational plans.
- Candidate will prepare and deliver work schedules and be involved in labor decisions as they relate to the Livestock business of AU Ranches.
- Prepares livestock budgets (OPEX and CAPEX) to then jointly create final draft for budget submittals for AU Ranches.
- Prepare scopes of work and requests for proposals for internal and third-party contributors.
- Assists with the Preparation of AFE’s and develop contracts for all livestock related projects.
- Prepare business plan, technical and permitting documents as necessary.
- Review technical reports, engineering designs and associated submittals to ensure consistency, quality and alignment with overall company and project standard and objectives.
- Develop presentations and meeting materials.
- Proactively anticipate issues and solves problems in the context of ranch operational requirements.
- Coordinate and prepare reports, budgets, and cost analyses with Manager of Biodiversity and the Ranch Business Manager.
- Works with the Ranch Business Assistant as needed to issue requisition’s, PO’s, contractor onboarding, and vendor payments.
- Directly supervises AU Ranch Staff charged with livestock production on the TS/Horseshoe and Dean Ranches.
Qualifications:
- Ten or more years of experience in ranch management, agricultural operations, or rangeland ecology fields required
- Bachelor of Science degree in one of the above fields preferred.
- Sound understanding and experience in management of ranch budgets and contracting
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain long-term relationships with internal staff, regulators, and other stakeholders (both internal and external) required
- Excellent written and oral communication skills,
- Computer skills and organizational skills required
- Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-moving team is required
- Ability to travel routinely between multiple ranch sites is required
- Ability to have a base office at NGM’s Horseshoe Ranch is required
- Ability to live on Ranch Property preferred
- Ability to operate heavy equipment located on Ranches preferred
- Valid Nevada driver’s license required
- Ability to be self motivated & able to work alone in remote locations required
- Ability to work in all climate conditions including high allergy conditions required
- Ability to be able to lift 50+ pounds required
Estimated Salary & Benefits: Salary Dependent on Experience, but job includes, housing, full employer provided healthcare, production bonuses, long term stock incentive programs, and many other employer sponsored benefits.
