Laurie Johnson and her husband, Brandon, of Johnson Cattle run 50 cows and background those calves until sale time in December. With the goal of F1 baldies in mind, the Johnsons run Angus cows with a Hereford bull. They also run a lamb to finish operation with 50 ewes who are mostly Dorset and Rambouillet. On the side, Laurie has a few laying hens for her family and neighbors.
Laurie has two beautiful boys (2-years-old and 4-months-old) who love being outside with the animals. She is currently finishing up the Ag leadership program in South Dakota called South Dakota Ag & Rural Leadership. Recently, she returned form Spain and Portugal where she learned about their agriculture industry. Laurie loves to travel and learn new things, especially anything involving agriculture.
Currently, Laurie is teaching at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, South Dakota in the areas of ranch management and online ag business, striving to give her students the best education possible by exposing them to practices that are outside the box and networking with as many people as possible. Many times this means field trips to operations or hosting a speaker. Laurie is involved with the South Dakota Cattlemen Association, South Dakota Cattlemen’s Auxiliary, South Dakota Sheep Growers Association, American National Cattlewomen, and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
