John Worthington was raised in a family rooted in agriculture and passionate about land, cattle, and conservation. His parents grew up on farming and ranching operations in Colorado and Oklahoma and helped cultivate a desire for agriculture throughout John’s childhood. From an early age, John knew he wanted to continue the tradition and pursue a career in the agricultural industry.
John had the extraordinary opportunity to grow up on an Oklahoma State University Range Research Station where his father served as the Station Superintendent. John was able to take part in the daily operations as well as witness scientists and graduate students conducting research on native grasslands through cattle and grazing experiments. John was active in FFA and received a State FFA degree and American FFA degree. After graduating high school, John attended Oklahoma State University and obtained Bachelor of Science in Rangeland Ecology and Management in 2009.
Soon after college graduation, John had the opportunity to take a position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2010 and expand his knowledge of conservation. He applied his skills in rangeland management by developing and implementing a grazing program to control invasive species and improve native grasslands at the Washita National Wildlife Refuge near Custer County, Oklahoma. During John’s career, he has served as the Assistant Refuge Manager and Acting Refuge Manager. Through his time with the Fish and Wildlife Service, he has conducted wildlife surveys, planned prescribed burns, engaged with partner organizations, and provided environmental education through public outreach.
John is excited and honored to have an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of agriculture through progressive science and conservation as a student in the King Ranch® Institute for Ranch Management program. It is a passion for agriculture, conservation, and research that has driven John to develop his expertise and professional growth in hopes of becoming a ranch manger and industry leader. John and his wife, Hannah, are excited to begin their journey and look forward to the new opportunity.
John holds the Four Sixes Endowed Fellowship as a graduate student at KRIRM.
