Position Title: Cattle Ranch Herdsman

Position Description: Herdsman needed to join a team on an established working cattle ranch in Wyoming. Report to Ranch Owner/Manager on everything cattle/ranch related. This Ranch has a distinct mission, vision, and values approach to who they are and what they do. Seeking an experienced cattleman and horseman who has a demonstrated commitment to a career in the cattle industry.
The Ranch cattle business currently consists of 600 mother cows, 400 yearlings, 30 bulls, and 20 horses. The ranch operates on several thousand deeded acres of hay ground and over 150,000 acres of summer grazing on USFS allotments. Further, the ranch operates a four-season outfitting camp that is staffed by a team who live on the ranch.
This full-charge role requires someone to work, teach, and lead in the jobs of winter feeding, calving, branding, summer range management, roundup, fall work, livestock purchases and sales. The preferred candidate is qualified to expertly lead and build up a herd of exceptional working horses for the ranch. The ideal person would contribute to a positive and team-oriented culture with thoughtful communication and effective people skills.
This ranch is looking for someone with personal goals that align with the ranch plans to grow and expand. Qualifications:
• Minimum 10 years ranch experience
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
• Ability to pass pre-employment background check
• Basic computer skills including e-mail, word processing, and basic spreadsheets
• Strong cow/calf cattle background
• Exceptional horseman capable of building a top-class working horse herd
• Be neat, organized and take exceptional care of equipment, facilities, and livestock
Responsibilities:
• Perform as an expert in Ranch safety. Practice and teach safety
• Perform as the lead person for the cattle and horse operations
• Monitor herds for sick animals. Doctor and/or separate
• Move herds continuously for managed grazing
• Monitor livestock markets and coordinate sales and purchases with Ranch Manager
• Schedule and manage shipment of livestock
• Start colts and teach others to start colts
• Produce finished working horses on a continuous basis
• Manage rangelands in a proactive manner
• Plan and lead livestock gathers and processing
• Manage the livestock infrastructure, including handling facilities, fences, water. Provide annual construction and maintenance budget and schedule
• Successfully represent the ranch to neighbors, governments, and the general public
• Effectively coordinate and communicate with the entire ranch team in a positive manner
