Position Title: Assistant Ranch Manager   

Name of Ranch/Business: El Jardin Ranch/ Navarro Cattle Company   

Location: Encinal, Texas

Position Description:

El Jardin Ranch is one of several ranches, which are part of the Lewis Energy Lands Division that spans from Mexico to Texas to Colorado.
 
El Jardin is a fully functioning cattle ranch with an additional focus on native wildlife management. We are seeking a highly motivated person to assist the Ranch Manager in the daily duties of caring for 400 cows and an outstanding herd of native whitetail deer. Candidates will also help on projects or events on the other ranches as well.

Potential candidates will help oversee 2 full time brush operators, 2 ranch hands and 6 H2A employees. Spanish speaking/bilingual is preferred, but not mandatory.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year College or University in Natural Resources/Animal Science or minimum of five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software, Excel, GIS, photo and video experience.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities. Excellent administrative and organizational competencies. Ability to manage short deadlines and emergency situations.
  • Ability to work 80hrs if needed; flexible and adaptable to various working and living conditions. Ability to quickly and efficiently manage a constantly evolving work environment in a remote location.
  • Work experience in ranch operations is preferred (general construction, facilities maintenance, equipment use, basic accounting, and contract administration.) Knowledge of brush management techniques.
  • Knowledge of ranch construction.   
  • Valid Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test and physical.
  • Basic computer skills including email for communication.   

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Overseeing cattle and wildlife operations. Inspects brush spraying, root plowing, roller chopping/seeding, fence building, pen building, and water resource development. Assist with guiding guests during hunting seasons (non-commercial); maintaining trail cameras, assisting and overseeing cattle movements.
  • Perform basic accounting and contract administration.
  • Directly supervises various employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.   

Estimated Salary:

  • $50,000 – $60,000
