Summary: 

This lectureship provides an introduction to a wide range of location-based technologies that can be used to improve management decisions for modern ranching operations.  The topics covered will range from Global Positioning Systems (GPS) data collection to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and analysis using both Google Earth and ESRI ArcGIS software.  This lectureship is for those with limited experience using these technologies.

Learning Objectives: 

• Collect GPS data in the field using a wide range of equipment.
• Import GPS data into both Google Earth and ESRI ArcGIS.
• Find and download a variety of GIS data (aerial photography, soils data, topography, etc.) from public web sites.
• Perform spatial analysis within ESRI ArcGIS using the core analysis tools, free add-on tools and the NRCS Soils Data Viewer.
• Develop comprehensive GIS databases and maps using ESRI ArcGIS software. 
• Communicate with others using both digital and printed map products. 
• Find help on the web and through digital help files.
