Dr. Benjamin Espy received a biology degree from Duke University in 1991.  In 1996, he became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Espy is a board certified specialist in equine reproduction, infertility, and neonatology.  During his career Dr. Espy has practiced equine medicine in Brenham, Texas, San Antonio, TX, and most recently in Lexington, KY at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute – a 42-doctor equine referral practice.  Dr. Espy attributes much of his respect for the intricacies of equine reproduction to his mentors Dr. Terry Blanchard and Dr. Dickson Varner at Texas A&M.  They are both recognized worldwide as leaders in the field of equine fertility.

In addition to being licensed to practice acupuncture, he is the past chairman of the American Association of Equine Practitioners Owner Education Committee, served on the AAEP Board of Directors, the Board of Directors for the American College of Theriogenology (www.theriogenology.org), and on the King Ranch Board of Directors. Dr. Espy has also served as the AAEP liaison for the Board of Directors of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association.  He serves on the ethics and grievance committee for the Texas Veterinary Medical Examiners.

Dr. Espy is a veterinarian for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and has been the head of the Veterinary Services for the last 20 years at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.  Dr. Espy is a consultant on the Animal Care and Welfare Committee for the PRCA. He was a finalist for the 2016 PRCA Veterinarian of the Year.

Representative of his currency with the literature and respect among his peers Dr Espy was just named to the Educational Program Committee of the AAEP. The work of the EPC consists primarily of formulating, organizing, and presenting a variety of continuing education programs for the AAEP.

He is also an editor for the magazine The Horse.
